Estradiol (E2)

Written by the Zenlo Health editorial teamUpdated 2026-10-14Education onlyHow we review
Short answerAn estradiol test measures E2, the most active estrogen in the body. Clinicians use it to look at ovarian function, menopause, fertility, and hormone therapy, and some men get it when estrogen may run high.
Fasting and prep
No fasting needed. If you still have periods, your clinician may want the draw on a specific cycle day (often day 2 to 4). Follow the instructions on your lab order.
Turnaround
Usually 1 to 3 days.
Also called
e2 test, estradiol blood test, estrogen test, estradiol level

What it measures

The ovaries make most estradiol before menopause. Men make a smaller amount, mostly by converting testosterone in fat tissue. Levels change across the menstrual cycle and fall after menopause. Hormone therapy, birth control, testosterone therapy, obesity, and some fertility drugs move the number. Standard tests can read less accurately at very low levels, as in men or after menopause.

Who should consider it

  • People with irregular, missing, or very heavy periods
  • People going through fertility testing
  • Anyone on estrogen or testosterone therapy whose clinician wants levels checked
  • Men with breast tissue growth or symptoms of high estrogen

How to read your result

  • Use the range printed on your report. Ranges depend on sex, cycle phase, and menopause status.
  • Estradiol alone does not diagnose menopause. Symptoms and age carry more weight, and FSH adds context.
  • Biotin supplements can interfere with some hormone tests. Tell the lab if you take them.
  • In men, a high result often traces back to body fat or testosterone therapy.

Reference ranges differ between labs. Use the range printed on your own report.

What to do next

Discuss an abnormal result with a clinician, who may repeat it on a set cycle day and add FSH, LH, or testosterone.

Questions people ask

What is a normal estradiol level?

It depends on your sex, age, and cycle phase. Use the range on your lab report and read it with a clinician.

Can estradiol confirm menopause?

Not on its own. Levels swing a lot during perimenopause, so clinicians diagnose menopause mostly from your periods and age.

Can I order an estradiol test without a doctor?

Yes. Many online lab sellers include it, alone or in hormone panels.
